Definition of GNU

Definition: GNU is short for "GNU is Not Unix", a recursive definition. It is a free Operating System created in 1984 by Richard Stallman, an activist in free software. GNU is sponsored by the Free Software Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Boston, MA, USA.

The GCC compiler for C and C++ compiler is part of GNU.

There is also dotGNU, an open source replacement for Microsoft's .NET.
