By David Bolton, About.com

Definition: Unix is an Operating System developed in the 1960s at Bells Labs. It is a rival platform to Win 32. AT&T did much of the subsequent development along with other vendors and universities such as Berkeley who produced the BSD Unix.

A major feature of Unix is that much of it was written in C and made it very popular as a systems programming language.
