Definition of SSH

By David Bolton, About.com

Definition: SSH is short for Secure SHell and is a secure network protocol that is primarily used to let you log into a remote computer running an SSH server. It was designed to replace telnet, an earlier protocol that passed username and password in plain text and so could be seen by anyone running sniffer software.

SSH is widely used in software such as Putty and WinSCP. Most UNIX and Linux servers run SSH and the open source version OpenSSH is widely used. It supports strong encryption (3DES, Blowfish, AES, Arcfour) and Data Compression and is free.
