Is driving a racing car simulator. When your simulator has been around for 15 years and it gets used as the basis for many research projects then that's really impressive. I'm talking about TORCS, The Open Racing Car Simulator. Not only can you race in it yourself but you can develop car bots that are coded in C/C++ and enter them in races against other bots. It's written in C++ and is cross platform for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The simulator is a whopping 200 Mb download (300 MB with Windows sources) but that includes the develoepr tools for writing your own car bots. Trying to steer with keyboard does not make for a great racing experience, so probably the only way I'll win a race is to write a bot that can do it for me!

There's a longer review of TORCS on the About Linux website.
