With astonishingly large user stats (175 million active users), and 52,000 applications (140 new ones each day, as bad as the iPhone!) Facebook is a truly massive platform- those statistics come from Facebook themselves. The top 10 applications range from 22 million users down to 9 million (a game Mafia wars). The apps are free but I gather there's revenue to the developers from ads and other ways like purchasing content.
Client side this has to fit in with Facebook either using an html iframe to insert your web page (which can include Flash or Silverlight 2 applications) in the Facebook page or Facebook's own ML. (sort of like JavaScript). Microsoft provide a Facebook developer toolkit (source, binaries and documentation) which lets your ASP.NET server talk to Facebook and which I've added to the C# code library. Mind you with 52,000 applications already, yours will have to be pretty special to gain a few million users!
