A Catalog of Free C Compilers

Friday November 28, 2008
Being the simplest programming language it's not that surprising there are so many C Compilers around, virtually all free. As well as the well known ones like Microsoft's Visual C++ 2008 Express (Which does compile C if you rename the file extension to .C) there is the well loved GCC, the super star of the open source development world, Xcode on Mac which is vital for iPhone development. Talking of which, there is a new version 2.2 iPhone SDK available for XCode, a trifling 1.56GB download!

So I have decided to start cataloging all the free C compilers/IDes I come across and will also do the same for C++ but not C# as the list is too short. I've added a few already to the new free C Compilers page including a relatively new computer science project from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany and one I used extensively 14 years ago- Watcom. I covered quite a few over the last couple of years so I'll gradually add those.
