A C# Tool Based on Java

Saturday September 13, 2008
Although I have preferences over which programming languages that's based more on my experience and use of a particular language rather than whether I think it's any good. Still, it's quite a surprise to find a free Visual Studio add-in that has its major functionality written (I believe) in Java. (If I'm wrong, please let me know).

The project is called Clone Detective and is hosted on Codeplex, Microsoft's open source website. However the heart of the project, which is about discovering cloned code in your C# project uses another Open Source project called conQAT (Continuous Quality Assessment Toolkit). The source code for this is in a 12 MB zip file with both C# and Java files. Note the comments in the Codeplex project; you would be well advised to export your Visual Studio settings and reload them afterwards if the commenters are correct. There are a couple of videos that show how Clone Detective works, it's an impressive piece of work.
