Reviewing a Java Games Book!

No don't panic, I haven't defected to the darker side (depends how you like coffee of course!) but occasionally I get sent books to review. I know, it's an onerous task but someone has to do it. The reason I'm reviewing this Java book and here in the blog is because it was written by a 15 year old Ian Cinnamon; the book is "Programming Video Games for the Evil Genius". Now you can see why it was sent to me!

Back in my youth I bought the Creative Computing game books which were compilations of games published in David Ahl's magazine in the 70s. I got into computing just after that so these were still around. Simple basic games like Hammurabi, Wumpus etc. You can still find those books and the source for those games on the web. Part of the joy of learning a new programming language for me was converting a game from the CC books. So I see this book as a modern day equivalent.

With 50 projects spread over 300 pages and well illustrated with tons of Java source, if you have an interest in programming games in C# I think any of these could be converted in a few hours. The games are a bunch of racing games, board games, shoot-em-ups, strategy, retro (Pacman & Mario types) and brain games. Java and C# are similar enough so if you want to venture outside your comfort zone. The author explains in some detail what he's doing and there are plenty of screen dumps and of course listings; it's a nice book. My only complaint is that I couldn't find anywhere to download the book's code.
